Documents and Other Information

*Based on information Gary Rhodes who has done a good deal of research on Oliver Bates, from land and census records it would appear that Laura and Francis were most likely born in Western, New York rather than Henderson, New York.  Here is the direct quote from Gary Rhodes:

I just wanted to offer some thoughts on the birth place of Laura and Francis Bates if anyone cares to correct what is out there. Most if not all places show or state that Laura and Fanny were born in Henderson in 1799 and 1801 respectively. The town was not formed at this time (1806) and as best I can see from my research over the years from land records, Oliver and perhaps some of his brothers were here in Henderson about 1807.   It appears that Oliver Left Halifax and went first to Western NY, the town where he appears in the 1800 census I believe it is. It is there, I believe that both of his daughters were born, but It is very near impossible that they were born in Henderson. Oliver first appears in the Federal Census in Henderson in 1810 and other land records show he was here likely 1808 and likely a year earlier, 1807.
