DNA

I know there those that come to this web site looking for information on Bates lines other than the ancestry and descendancy of Oliver Bates and Rebecca Hart or they do not know what Bates line they are connected to. For those I want to mention a valuable tool for modern genealogical efforts - DNA.

The Bates Association and The Bates Family of Old Virginia have teamed up to conduct a Bates DNA Project through Family Tree DNA. Many have already participated and I believe most of the immigrant Bates lines uncovered so far are represented.  What this means for you is, if you are a male descendant of the Bates line you are researching (or you have such a descendant available), you can participate in this DNA project and possibly find out which immigrant Bates line you descend from.

DNA can point you in the right direction.  There as been much research done on the immigrant Bates lines represented by The Bates Association and The Bates Family of Old Virginia.  If your DNA shows a connection to one of these lines, you know you are connected and just need to find out how and at what point.  Sometimes this involves backward research but at least you have something to aim for and probably a lot of research already done for you.

At one time these sponsoring family organizations provided a discount to those members of their respective groups to participate in the DNA project.  This is/was a dues supported discount.  I recommend contacted either group if you are having problems with your Bates line as there are very capable volunteers with both organizations that may be able to help you.  Dues are affordable and can provide you a wealth of guidance.  I also highly recommend participating in the DNA project to get you possibly pointed to the Bates line you have a connection to.

Birth Place of Laura and Fanny Bates (daughters of Oliver and Rebecca) PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 14 September 2008 16:07

Based on the following statement from Gary Rhodes, I have changed the birth place listed on the website for Laura and Fanny, daughters of Oliver Bates and Rebecca Hart.

I just wanted to offer some thoughts on the birth place of Laura and Francis Bates if anyone cares to correct what is out there. Most if not all places show or state that Laura and Fanny were born in Henderson in 1799 and 1801 respectively. The town was not formed at this time (1806) and as best I can see from my research over the years from land records, Oliver and perhaps some of his brothers were here in Henderson about 1807.   It appears that Oliver Left Halifax and went first to Western NY, the town where he appears in the 1800 census I believe it is. It is there, I believe that both of his daughters were born, but It is very near impossible that they were born in Henderson. Oliver first appears in the Federal Census in Henderson in 1810 and other land records show he was here likely 1808 and likely a year earlier, 1807.

Henderson, New York PDF Print E-mail

A new site is up and running for Henderson, New York, where the Cyrus Bates home is located (built by Cyrus Bates and his father, Oliver Bates) - hendersonny.com. The site was put together by Gary Rhodes who resides in the historic Oliver and Cyrus Bates home and has been quite helpful in researching the Bates history of the home and area (as well as doing much in the way of genealogy research for the Henderson area). He successfully got the home designated on the State and National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to check out the gift shop which includes a Bates Commemorative Plate that has a drawing of the home and property (from a later date). Proceeds from the gift shop are put back into the veterans memorial and historical research efforts.

A stone has been set for Oliver Bates and also John Pentingill in Carpenter Cemetery (Revolutionary War stones). This effort was also spearheaded by Gary Rhodes.

A special thanks to Gary Rhodes and his efforts!

I just added to the Oliver Bates and Rebecca Hart page a copy of the Estate Inventory for Oliver Bates (which is signed by his son, Cyrus Bates).  It is interesting to see what was listed and the values.  A special thanks to Jane Cote who forwarded a copy of this document to me.
